BIRTH is a play based on over one hundred interviews playwright
Karen Brody conducted with mothers across America who gave birth
between 2000-2004. It tells the true stories of 8 women painting a
portrait of how low-risk, educated women are giving birth in
America today.
After each performance of BIRTH there will be a BOLD Talkback,
giving audience members the opportunity to discuss the play, their
reactions, and their feelings about birth with local panelists from
the community.
BOLD is a global initiative to help improve maternity care to be
Mother-Friendly by using the arts to inspire communities to educate
themselves, speak their truth and take action on maternity care
issues. This grass-roots event raises awareness and provides
a fundraising opportunity for organizations and individuals to
support mother-initiated
dialogue and solutions to today’s maternity care problems.
The 2008 BIRTH performances in Philadelphia are being produced by
Birth Works International, a non-profit organization offering
childbirth educator and doula certification programs located in
Medford, New Jersey.
Proceeds will help Birth Works provide training scholarships for
educators and doulas, and educational events for the public and
community reaching more women, empowering them through education
while strengthening their
families in an effort to achieve positive change in our maternity
care system.
