Devil Music Ensemble
performs live score to only existing feature length of China's golden silent era - 1929 silent Kung Fu film RED HEROINE

Before Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, there was Red Heroine. Made in Shanghai in 1929 at the height of the martial arts craze, the film was banned after the Cultural Revolution and is the only extant feature length "Kung Fu" film of China's golden silent era. Directed by Wen Yimin, Red Heroine recounts the rise of a mystical young woman warrior who exacts vengeance on the army that kidnapped her and killed her grandmother. The Devil Music Ensemble's latest composition is the only modern score made expressly for the film and draws from the traditions of Chinese classical and folk music as well as soundtracks from classic Kung Fu cinema. pictured: red heroine film still

Comprised of three multi-instrumentalists - Brendon Wood on electric guitar, lap steel, and synthesizer; Jonah Rapino on electric violin, lap steel, vibraphone, erhu (two-string Chinese violin) and synthesizer; and Tim Nylander on drums and a variety of Chinese percussion instruments - the Devil Music Ensemble (DME) is one of the premiere American groups currently composing and performing original scores to silent films. Formed in Boston in 1999, the DME's tightly synced, genre-bending performances are hypnotic and have attracted a loyal following that turns out repeatedly, eager to experience the new sonic territory the group explores with each project.

The DME has played everywhere from barns to 2,000-seat performing art centers, including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, the Danish Film Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, Caixa Forum in Barcelona, Spain and at numerous other venues. Members of the DME have also received acclaim for their soundtracks for recent films such as Darkon, Day of the Cabbage and Alice.

Doors open at 7:30pm
