Devil Music Ensemble
performs live score to only existing feature length of China's
golden silent era - 1929 silent Kung Fu film RED HEROINE
Before Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,
there was Red Heroine. Made in Shanghai in 1929 at the height of
the martial arts craze, the film was banned after the Cultural
Revolution and is the only extant feature length "Kung Fu" film of
China's golden silent era. Directed by Wen Yimin, Red Heroine
recounts the rise of a mystical young woman warrior who exacts
vengeance on the army that kidnapped her and killed her
grandmother. The Devil Music Ensemble's latest composition is the
only modern score made expressly for the film and draws from the
traditions of Chinese classical and folk music as well as
soundtracks from classic Kung Fu cinema. pictured: red heroine film
